Maybe I should have built the levees

When the hurricane came in I wasn’t even paying attention. I am from California, where the stars shine and illegal immigrants can take over and our schools are loosin money faster than I do when I empty my purse and forget to pick up the change and my oldest son comes up right behind me like a vacuum cleaner stuffin his pockets.
I watched as millions of my people, your people, our people lost everything they owned and ever loved. Mothers separated from their children and so on and so on. People living amongst the dead for days, weeks, months and now, since the memory never gets better, years.
Like i said i wasn’t there I was in California.
I saw all the pictures of the dead bodies in the roads and streets and stuck in windows and in gutters and in attics and under refrigerators. I saw people so desperate for food and diapers and clothes and anything else that they needed to survive because the government was no where in sight.

I was watchin it on the news in California.
I have listened as people have cried and been cheated by their insurance companies out of everything they have worked for and built.
I mean lets think, they are on the water and there is always a chance of a hurricane which means there is always a chance for a flood so it is amazing that the insurance companies never offered a letter or some kind of reminder, hey don’t forget flood protection.
I was here where we pay for everything from bottled water to my baby only wears name brand diapers.
Here in California.
I don’t think one is better than the other but with the things the way they are in the gulf coast why is Oprah running to Africa to start a school when she could go to the 9th ward or the other beyond recognition cities and rebuild some homes and maybe on her show reunite families who were victims of Katrina, or maybe find the ppl who are getting evicted by fema and find them a place to live. With all the money she has, think of how many places that could be and it wouldn’t even put a dent in her pockets.
The football players, maybe instead of their paycheck being so damn outrageous there should be a certain amount of money that comes out to build a home or two do you know how many homes that would be.
What do we do? What do i do? why can’t i help?
Our pastors and so on are running down to Africa to save the people of that region but what about Louisiana? What about New Orleans? Why not go there and help rebuild give ppl hope and tell them that everything will be alright? Why is it 2009 and in Africa Bill Gates has built a fresh water filtration system, but why does New Orleans still look the same?
How is it that 9-11 happened and the city has a memorial and ppl are making a profit from the tragedy with shirts and photos and on and on and that money goes back into the same hands that caused it, the government. They got a memorial and they have cleared away the bodies covered in ash and even put lights so that everyone remembers but i think we forgot that New Orleans still looks the same.
I don’t know what else to say. With Obama there is suppose to be change but i believe they are trying to keep him sidetracked as they have us for all this time. Keep his mind occupied with finances and other things so he can forget about the others worse off. O i know that times are hard but when you start to write a comment to this article that isn’t so nice i want you to think about this, being on the roof of your home for days and weeks and watching your child die from malaria or just because they haven’t eaten at least there are food banks that you can go to it may not be much but i am sure it is better than nothing. When you are upset cause well, i don’t know just cause, think about those who have less, those who have no one and those who have no hope and do yourself and them a favor and get a grip.
So this September i am not gonna only remember 9-11 as the great American tragedy i will remember KATRINA because like 9-11 it wasn’t nature that let us down it was man who lets us down.
